It is the smallest border in Europe , and is the only bridge connecting Denmark and Germany. The border crossing was established in 1920 and could only be crossed by special permission. It was closed during the second World War and completely reopened again when Denmark joined the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement" target="_blank">Schengen</a> on 25th March 2001.
